about the artists

planet seen SEEN

In the mid 70's an eleven-year old boy developed a tenacious drive for blanketing the entire city of New York. SEEN hit the subway cars with a vehemence few artists could follow. Throw-ups, tags, blockbusters, whole cars, window downs were all done daily. NYC's vandal squad didn't stand a chance. He quickly gained "king status" and left no rock unturned. SEEN'S love of the spray can and the style he developed blossomed. Movies were made along with book publishings. During the last three decades, SEEN has grown into a world-renowned artist, displaying his artwork in some of the most prestigious galleries anywhere. He is considered by many to be one of the most influential and contributing factors in the international spread of graffiti. SEEN has been coined the "Godfather of Graffiti", and it's a title he holds true to his heart.

Z: The man, the myth, the ubiquitous legend. When it comes to grafitti, SEEN is with the heaviest of the heavies. A tireless pioneer, SEEN has been getting up and staying up for decades. He started his graff career hitting subway cars in New York at age 11, while I was busy playing little league and trying to mix cocacola and poprocks. His work has been published and documented in countless books, magazines and dvds (including heavy-hitting style wars) SEEN is currently kicking all sorts of urban ass with his vinyl toy line, Planet 6, which will soon include a 3D version of that little aerosol miser "Squirt" pictured throwing up signs on your left.

space invader SPACE INVADER

After playing too many space-invader games when he was a kid Invader decided to make the game reality by replacing pixels with mosaic tiles and cementing them on the street walls. He has now spread his mosaic characters in 35 cities all over the world and it is not finished yet ! Last year he decided to associate himself with another famous 1980's game made of small coloured squares - Rubik Cube, which allowed him to work in 3D... and to carry on invading.

Z: If you travel the world, there's a good chance you've seen Invader's inspiring mosaics plastered throughout the big cities. If you only travel to the bookstore, there's a good chance you've seen Invader's work gracing just about every underground magazine you can get your paws on. I first came across his work quite by accident, wandering the back alleys of Southern France. Truth is, you don't have to randomly come across his sculptures looking for a baguette in the Meditteranean. If you have a keen eye, you'll spot his grout ups in LA, New York, Berlin, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Australia and just about everywhere in between. (As long as the treasure hunting street urchins don't chisle away his work before you get a chance to spot it.) Peruse his website. Shit, peruse anyone's website and you'll see the invaders in all their glory. Oh and one more thing, this has to be the best possible use for your spare euros.

buff monster BUFF MONSTER

Pink as a color and an idea is essential to Buff Monster's work. He started painting graffiti in Hawaii in 1995. In 1997 he moved to Los Angeles and switched from graffiti to stickers and posters. The hand-silkscreened posters have been seen in the streets of Los Angeles, Tokyo, Barcelona and many others in between. He also paints brightly colored, oozing landscapes inspired by ice cream, heavy metal, porn and graffiti. Now, Buff Monster continues to put up new posters every week and works at BPM magazine as the Creative Director. And he is working on expanding the empire to include a variety of merchandise.

Z: If street artists were porn stars, Buff Monster AKA Random would be Ron Jeremy. Why ? I honestly have no idea, but look hard and you'll spot Buff's artwork everywhere from back alley telephone poles - to coporate clothes racks at Macy's - to 80 foot building murals - to girl on girl strap on clips in dvd backdrops. How many artists do you know who can say Paris Hilton's skinny ass rubbed up against their paintings ? Buff's work has decorated the pages of BM, Hustler, Vapors, XFuns, Faesthetic, Juxtapoz, Time and too many more to list. Buff is rad. It's about time he's assembled with us fellow robots.

evil design MCA

MCA is best known as the mastermind behind Evil Design. If you picked up Kid 606's acclaimed The Action Packed Mentalist Brings You the Fucking Jams CD, or own a T-shirt from Weezer's Pinkerton world tour, or from Mission of Burma's recent string of "Inexplicable" reunion shows, then you've seen his work. He's also becoming a well-known name in the world of toy design, having recently released a Wizard Circus Punk, as well as an original vinyl figure based on his Evil Ape character. This figure and 33 new 2" Qees, also based on the Evil Ape, are being produced by the Hong Kong toy company Toy2R.

Z: You can usually find MCA buried deep in his sticker covered labratory with nothing but a stack of paper and a pile of pens, drawing. drawing. drawing. And lately, just about everywhere you look, MCA's classic campy comical characters are spotted. His drawing style is as easily recognizable as are his ever growing archive of vinyl toys, with more colorways than Geroge Clinton's hair piece. Yeah, that's him in the Mexican Maxxim. Get to know him for yourself, you'll be glad you did.

urban medium URBAN MEDIUM

Is UrbanMedium a one man outfit ? A team of designers ? Perhaps a corporate giant masquerading in an attempt to infiltrate the minds of urban youth ? None of the above... UrbanMedium is a husband and wife design duo (Derek and Heather) with a knack for creating sweet eye candy. Born out of a daydream back in 2000 and fueled by the frustration of the 9 to 5 grind, UrbanMedium creates the kind of shit they want to hang on their walls, wear on their bodies, and plaster on their environmentsÉ and you'll want to as well.

Z: What do you get when you cross boba fett, the kool aid man, wheatpaste residue, cuts, scrapes, torn edges, vacant urban landscape and good design ? you get Urban Medium. Masters at mixing pop culture icons with just the perfect level of distress, the UM crew know how to make you want to represent. Just ask Too Short.

zoltron ZOLTRON

Zoltron has had one of the most variety-filled careers in the entertainment industry. He first got his start on the never made television series "The Dommers", where he portrayed the artistic teen heartthrob Canyon Dommers. The show featured a family traveling the country and wheatpasting abandoned buildings, while devising michiveous ploys to ruin the lives of innocent victims. Episode one featured "Canyon" smearing liquid LSD on the sticky backs of public envelopes at various Versateller machines. In another episode, he secretly used a syringe to administer muriatic acid into visine dispensers at the local drugstores. The pilot was never picked up. It was then that he founded the self titled company, Zoltron, a full service design studio catering to those who want really bad graphics. Several years and many clients later, Zoltron founded Sticker Robot , a sticker printing company that some people call the world's best possible service. Zoltron's unique creations have been spotted from California to Poland, Kamchatka to Irkutzch, Thailand to Tennessee. Zoltron's work has been shown throughout the country and published in lots of rad magazines. His work was once called "pretty heavy..." by a guy who happened to be walking by when Zoltron was urinating on a dumpster. Random Zoltron stickers will be added to the kit.
